Proofreading and Rewrite

A companion on the suggestion bar that checks your paragraph with Apple Intelligence on the device, and rewrites it on request.

What you need

An iPhone that supports Apple Intelligence. Proofreading runs on the device using the on-device model, so what you write does not leave the phone.

Turn it on

  1. Open Keys → Typing and switch on Proofreading.
  2. Switch on Live proofreading to check automatically after you pause typing. It is available once Proofreading is on.

A small companion character appears in the suggestion bar. It looks idle when there is nothing to check, thinks while the model works, and reports how many fixes it made.

Rewrite

Tap the companion to open Rewrite. It works on the text around the cursor:

Fix grammarCorrects spelling, grammar and punctuation.
ShorterCuts it down and keeps the meaning.
FriendlierWarms the tone.
FormalMakes it more professional.
RepliesDrafts replies to your message in a few different tones. The keyboard cannot see incoming messages, so replies are based on what you have typed.

How it decides

The model proposes changes and NuKey reviews each word before applying it, so a fix is only accepted where it is clearly better. It is deliberately cautious around names, brand names and anything you have added to My Words.

Good to knowSeasonal dress-up for the companion (Halloween and Christmas) is controlled by Season Theme in the Keys menu.
