Themes and keyboard slots

Pick a built-in board, build your own, and keep up to thirty-two keyboards in slots.

The built-in themes

Open Theme from the home hub. The top of the page is a typing preview that shows the active theme together with your current lighting, so you can press keys and watch it before you commit.

There are eight ready-made boards: Classic, NuKey, Accents, Graphite, NuChron, Hero and two Liquid Glass boards (the Liquid Glass boards need iOS 27 or later; on earlier versions you see the other six). Each is a complete set of keycaps, legends and accents. Classic is free; the rest come with NuKey Pro.

  1. Open Theme.
  2. Tap any tile. The preview updates at once.
  3. Open any text field and switch to NuKey. The theme is already there.

Light and Dark Mode

Built-in themes follow your device's appearance. Switch on Dark keyboard in Light Mode to keep a theme's dark look even while iOS is in Light Mode.

Good to knowThe option is unavailable when the selected theme has no separate dark design. The caption under it tells you which case you are in.

Your own keyboards: slots

Underneath the built-ins are your slots. Free users get one slot; Pro adds thirty-one more, thirty-two in all, spread over pages.

  • Tap an empty slot to build a new keyboard (see Building a keyboard).
  • Hold a keyboard you have made to duplicate, share, rename or delete it.
  • Drag one to another slot to reorder. Hold it over a chevron to carry it to the next page.
  • If every slot is full, delete one to make room.
TipDuplicate before you experiment. A copy costs a slot but means you can always get back.

Three quick ways to start

Create from imageSamples its colours from a photo and builds a keyboard around them.
Import QR codeOpens a theme someone shared with you, from a code in Photos or the camera.
Surprise meGenerates a random theme. Tap it again for another.

You can also ask an AI model to design a theme: copy the NuKey theme prompt into any capable assistant, describe a mood, attach a reference image if you like, and open the file it writes in NuKey.

Changing theme while you type

Turn on the Theme switcher utility key in the Keys menu (Keys → Utility keys). A key appears on the keyboard that cycles your themes without leaving the field. Pro.
